ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ದಿನಾಂಕ : 2008-05-08  ಮುಂಬೈ: ಅಮೆರಿಕ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷೀಯ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗೆ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಸಲು ಡೆಮೊಕ್ರಟ್ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಹಿಲರಿ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಾರಕ್ ಒಬಾಮಾ ನಡುವೆ ತೀವ್ರ ಸೆಣಸಾಟ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಇಡೀ ವಿಶ್ವಕ್ಕೇ ಗೊತ್ತಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಈ ಸೆಣಸಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಜಿನ್ನ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಬೆಳಗಾವಿಯವರೂ ಒಬ್ಬರಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರೇ- ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್. ಬೆಳಗಾವಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಸದ್ಯ ಹಿಲರಿ ಅವರ ಫಂಡ್ ರೈಸರ್. ಅಂದರೆ ಹಿಲರಿ ಪ್ರಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವವರು. ಬೆಳಗಾವಿಯ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್, ಅಮೆರಿಕದಲ್ಲಿ 9 ಔಷಧ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾಲೀಕ. ಈಗ ಮರಾಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ `ಹೈ ಶ್ರೀ ಇಚ್ಛಾ' (ಇದು ಶ್ರೀಯ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ) ಎಂಬ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೊಂದನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. `ನೀವು ಕನಸು ಕಾಣುವ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಸಾಧಿಸಬಹುದು' ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತಿರುಳು. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ದೊರೆಯಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಚುರಪಡಿಸಲು ಕೆಲದಿನಗಳ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮುಂಬೈಗೆ ಅವರು ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನೆನಪು ಮೆಲಕು: ಹಿಲರಿ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ಗೆ ಆಪ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅಮೆರಿಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಪನಿಗಳ ಮಾಲೀಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಹಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಮರೆತಿಲ್ಲ. `30 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಮುಂಬೈಗೆ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ದಾದರ್ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಲಾಡ್ಜ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ತಂಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಈಗ ನಾರಿಮನ್ ಪಾಯಿಂಟ್ನ ದುಬಾರಿ ಹಿಲ್ಟನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ತಂಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ' ಎಂದು ಅವರು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಬಾಮಾ ಹಾಗೂ ರಿಪಬ್ಲಿಕನ್ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿ ಜಾನ್ ಮೆಕೇನ್ ಪರವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅವರು ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಹಿಲರಿ ಅಂದರೇ ಇಷ್ಟ. ಹಿಲರಿ ಭಾರತದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಾಂಧವ್ಯ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದೇ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್. ಬಿಲ್ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ ಭಾಷಣಕ್ಕೆ 40 ಲಕ್ಷ: ಹಿಲರಿ ಅವರ ಪತಿ ಅಮೆರಿಕದ ಮಾಜಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಬಿಲ್ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ ಜತೆಗೂ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 2007ರ ಮೇನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಷಿಂಗ್ಟನ್ ಡಿಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಸಮಾರಂಭವೊಂದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿಶೇಷ ಆಹ್ವಾನಿತರಾಗಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅದೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿಲ್ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ಬಿಲ್ ಅವರ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಗೆಳೆಯರೊಬ್ಬರು ಆ ಸಮಾರಂಭ ಆಯೋಜಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಬಿಲ್ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ ಒಂದು ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷಣ ಮಾಡಲು 40 ಲಕ್ಷ ರು. `ಬಿಲ್' ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಅಂದಿನ ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಯಾವುದೇ ಹಣ ಪಡೆಯಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್. ಅದೇ ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ತಮ್ಮ ಮರಾಠಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. `ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ಗೆ ತರ್ಜುಮೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಅಮೆರಿಕದ ದುರ್ಬಲರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ ನೀಡಬಲ್ಲದು' ಎಂದು ಕ್ಲಿಂಟನ್ ಸಲಹೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ನೆನೆಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಿಲರಿ ಪರ ಏಕೆ?: ಹಿಲರಿ ಅವರ ಪಕ್ಷವಾದ ಡೆಮೊಕ್ರಟಿಕ್ನ ನೀತಿಗಳು ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಲಾಭದಾಯಕವಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ಹಿಲರಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಬೆಂಬಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಯೆಹೂದಿಗಳಂತೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಹೊಂದುವ ಬಯಕೆ ಅಮೆರಿಕದಲ್ಲಿನ ಭಾರತೀಯರಿಗಿದೆ. ನಾವು ಆರ್ಥಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸದೃಢ. ಆದರೆ, ರಾಜಕೀಯವಾಗಿ ದುರ್ಬಲ. ಈಗ ಇದು ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ Thursday, May 08, 2008 Shriniwas Thanedar is a fundraiser for the Clintons and he’s in Mumbai to tell everyone his story MUMBAI: The world’s eyes are on the ongoing, often vicious, battle between Democrat presidential hopefuls, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. But few know of the people behind the engines of war, and one of them is a certain Dr Shriniwas Thanedar. From humble beginnings in a village in Karnataka, Thanedar has risen the ranks to become one of the key fundraisers for Hillary Clinton. And he’s in Mumbai on a short tour to promote his Marathi book, Hi Shree Chi Ichha [This is Shree’s wish]. The book is about his life, and his rise to success — from starting out as a villager in Belgaum, Karnataka, to becoming the owner of nine pharmaceutical companies in the US. Thanedar wants to make this book available to youngsters in rural areas, to spread a simple message: If you dare to dream, anything is possible. After introducing himself in English, he switches to Marathi, the language of his childhood. He’s not the only Indian taking active interest in the US political arena. “The Indian community in the US has dominated the election fund raising this year,” he says. “In fact, Indians are among the top fundraisers for Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama. This is because many Indians feel that the Democrats’ policies will be beneficial to India.” Having seen the political influence of the Jewish community, Indians in the US want to follow suit. “We are economically strong, but politically we are not as strong yet. But this is changing” he says. Thanedar’s journey has been an uphill task. When he came to Mumbai for the first time 30 years ago, he stayed at the Krishna Lodge in Dadar. This time, he has booked a plush room at the Hilton Towers in Nariman Point. But one look at his attire and his choice of breakfast — Alphonso mangoes — and you know that his ties to his homeland run deep, and will never be forgotten. His humility comes across instantly. Thanedar has raised funds for Obama and Republican candidate John McCain. But his personal choice is Hillary Clinton. He describes the Hillary Clinton as a “kind and lovely woman”. “The Clintons have a deep affection for India. Hillary can definitely make a difference to India if she wins the race and becomes the next US president,” he says. Thanedar first met former US president Bill Clinton at a charity function in Washington DC in May 2007. The function was organised by Clinton’s childhood friend and Thanedar was a special invitee for the function. “Bill Clinton usually charges $1 lakh for delivering a speech at any function. But he charged nothing for this function. He greeted all the guests warmly, and even posed with them for the photographers. When I told him about my book, he was delighted. He suggested that I translate the book in English, so that it could serve as an inspirational story to the under-privileged in the US too,” he says. And that is one of Thanedar’s missions. “I have started the process, and I will complete it soon,” he says with quite determination.
