March 18. 2010 : An Indian man accused of human trafficking tried to kill himself in a Dubai court today.
The defendant, KK, tried to choke himself by pulling a scarf that was knotted around his neck after hearing his trial would again be adjourned.
The court watched in shock and a female police officer was heard to scream as her male colleagues tried to restrain the 40-year-old defendant.
While he pulled on the scarf, KK mumbled incoherently at the panel of judges before being restrained by officers.
The presiding judge, Fahmy Mounir Fahmy, ordered the defendant be taken back to the holding cells in the court.
KK, an Indian farmer, and two other men face charges of human trafficking related to three Bangladeshi women. They are also accused of rape, using the women as prostitutes and assaulting them.
The accused have been waiting for four police witnesses who have failed to appear before the court since October 26.
Their case has now been adjourned until April 12.
